Garden Blogger's Bloom Day for May 2009

Well, I went back and looked at last year's May bloom day, and it looks like the yard is a bit ahead of last year's blooming times. For example, my lilacs are blooming now! Last year they had just begun to bud out. And the weeping cherry is all done, now.
Other bloomers include a few tulips (that the deer/bunnies missed), phlox, rock cress, and the wisteria. The alliums are just starting to pop, I've spread them to a lot of new places.
These burgundy/pink pansies have been a fave of mine, still looking spectacular from last fall.
The red bud tree is doing its thing -
And this year I have 4 (no, 5!) lilacs instead of just three. Yipin-etly! One of my favorite smells is lilacs in the springtime.
These star of Bethlehem are new to us this year, one of my DH's finds.. I think they are supposed to bloom earlier??

The regular vinca is blooming, this one jumped ship from a container to our rock wall, and this is the first year I've seen it bloom. The flower is more purpl-y than this photo indicates.
These mini irises were blooming last year at this time. I didn't remember that this is my second year for them. :)
Many thanks to Carol at May Dreams Gardens for coming up with bloom day! Go see what else is blooming around the world!

My, what beautiful flowers! I haven't seen that color of pansies here. I will look for them this fall and hope to have as good as luck as you did.

Those iris look like a bit like mine, I don't know their name though. I have a lilac but I keep forgetting to prune it and the blooms are too far up to sniff at close range. I bought a vaseful at the farmers market last week for my mom on Mother's Day and a lady on the street stopped me so she could take a big whiff! I let her have all the time she needed. :) Happy Bloom Day!

I have four lilacs but only one of them produced blooms this year. The rabbits demolished one and the other two just didn't bloom. I'm hoping for a better year with them next year.

Lynne - I think I got those pansies at a very exclusive garden shop (Wal-mart) :)

Karen and Blackswamp girl- I checked for a tag on those mini iris, no luck, so I'll go thru my- ahem!- records and see if I can find the name. love 'em!

Gail, Karen and Robin - I guess if we always had lilacs blooming, we'd just take them for granted. I have two that aren't blooming this year, also.

thanks for all your comments!

My Star of Bethlehem are always blooming on the May Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day. I'm in Ohio, and they are right on schedule.

Such pretty pictures of such pretty blooms! My irises aren't blooming yet, but we do have many other plants that are.
Red bud trees are gorgeous--hope you'll post photos of yours when it's in full bloom!
Have a great weekend!

I love lilacs too, have several in the yard. They never seem to be blooming for GBBD, they always hit between dates. The scent is great, but I am starting to get very fond of the little dianthus plants I have, they will scent that whole corner of the yard with their spicy clovey scent.

Love those little irises, very pretty.

You planted burgundy/pink pansies, too! Mine were in a bed with pink hyacinths, pink and white Sweet William and Baths Pinks, the dianthus kind; and Spirea bumalda.

I saw where you asked about hardiness of Mexican Bush Sage (salvia leucantha) on someone's blog. I lost two of mine in this warm zone, and they had excellent drainage. Easily rooted, they work as annuals, the bigger flush of bloom in in the fall when the days grow short. I keep little cuttings over the winter to replace those I lose.
