GREEN THUMB SUNDAY Purple Ruffles Basil

This was a volunteer in my veggie garden this year. It is not so tasty to me, but I love the color, and have used it in some flower arrangements for an unusual filler. I hope it self-seeds again next season.I grew lettuce leaf basil for eating, and I have enjoyed that variety ok, but am remembering a smaller leafed basil - oh - spicy globe basil- that I think I will grow next year. Any other recommendations for yummy -or beautiful- basil varieties?

This is a lovely color. It would look striking against something in a lime green! Happy GTS.

I planted that same basil this year. I didn't eat it either. I just liked the color. Mine didn't grow very well, though.

Isn't it funny how as the garden season goes on you remember things you forgot to plant and will plant next year? With me it was borage this year, I love the clear blue flowers. Nice pics and your salsa looks yummy!

I think the colour is lovely too. I like foliage that is different and unusual. Sara from farmingfriends

Try African Blue Basil-continues to produce well while flowering, has good flavor-somewhat spicy and is slightly more tolerant of cold. Here in zone 8-9 I can winter it over by covering if we don't get a really hard freeze. The leaves are a little coarser than lettuce leaf and not as large. But the flowers and seeds can also be used and are very flavorful.

I grew cinnamon basil this year and this purple ruffles would look great with that! I'll have to remember this for next year. Remind me next spring, 'kay?
