Show and Tell Friday - glass frig storage

The week has just flown by- it's Friday already. Head over to Kelli's blog There is no Place Like Home, to see what everyone else has to show today. This is a glass refrigerator container (pre-Tupperware?) that I found in a thrift shop. I didn't even know what it was, but my friend, Dona, did. I like the fruit on the lid. I don't use it a lot, I just keep it in my china hutch. It doesn't have any manufacturing name or mark on it that I can see. If anyone knows anything about these glass boxes, please let me know!
It looks like just the right size to hold cornmeal mush in. Maybe some of you remember fried cornmeal mush for breakfast? I don't make it very often, it is a recipe too full of fat and sugar for me, but it sure is a tasty breakfast. Also, as I've learned from feeding it to my husband, it is one of those recipes that you have to 'grow up with' to enjoy. (i.e., it is one of the few things he doesn't really care for!)

I found a recipe for Fried Cornmeal Mush at Taste of Home that seems like the way my mom used to make it for us.
Fried Cornmeal Mush

4 cups water, divided
1 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon salt
Oil for frying
Maple syrup
Directions:
Boil 3 cups water. Combine remaining water with cornmeal and salt; add to boiling water. Stir until mixture returns to a boil.
Pour into a greased 8-in. x 4-in. x 2-in. loaf pan.
Chill for 8 hours or overnight. Slice 1/4 to 1/2-in. thick. Fry in a large skillet with shortening or oil until browned on each side.
Serve with syrup. Yield: 14-16 servings.
As I said, I don't make it very often. It is best when it is cooked thin and the edges are crispy. A cheap, if not particularly nutritious, breakfast.

My mother in law had a couple of these that we have now and she would always make jello with fruit that she molded in these and then at Thanksgiving she'd make her own cranberry sauce and serve it in these containers. What a fun find. I really like the fact that they have lids...

This is a great treasure!!! I would love to have it myself. Like Betty above says --"My mom had them"...here too, I remember these from my childhood days.

My show n tell is a Valentine wreath I made this week. I do hope you can drop by for a visit.

Is your family from the South too? That was something my grandma used to make, that and Chocolate Gravy. You're right about having grown up with it, my Hub thinks I have lost my mind! My best friend has quite a collection of these glass refrigerator dishes. I think they're from the 40's and 50's. She found them in antique stores and such and still uses them!

What a great glass container. I've often seen those but never have bought any because I wouldn't know what to do with them lol

I don't like the mush, but I love the refrigerator dish! Diane, over at Tomato Soup Cake, just bought some modern ones. I did not know you could find them any more. I think she was in a specialty kitchen store. Thanks for sharing.

I have one of these only it's plain (Got it when my grandparents passed away). I keep my real butter in it. Works great for that! Wish I had one like yours for special times of the year.

Great glass dish! I've never seen them with fruit on the lid before.

What a great collectable--I would love to have that. Martha Stewart did a show on those before, they are so pretty.

That is an interesting pan. I thought maybe something like fruit cake came in it. I remember when we would buy oatmeal and dig out the cup or saucer in them! That was always fun.

My Mom made us fried cornmeal too but she just made more one morning then the next day she would fry the remaining mush. I liked it a lot!

I love your glass dish. I found an old glass juice/water jug at an antique store and I love it. Glass is much better to use than plastic. Healthier.

My mother has one just like that, too! We used to get raw milk from friends who had a cow, and we churned our own butter. Mother used her dish like that for butter then. I think she just uses it for left-overs or something now. I should ask her.

I remember those, my mother had them. I wonder how they made it this long without getting broken! I guess that was the day before ceramic tile counters and floors!

It has been fun to read everyone’s comments. I like to use this dish for holiday dinners, too.
Constance, I am not from the South, and fried mush seems like it should be a southern dish, but we had it growing up in Ohio.
MammyT and Juliann, thanks for the ideas about where to look for more information about this dish.

I don' remember ever seeing anything like that refrigerator glass bowl. It is a pretty dish, but I'm wondering what people used that for years ago when that was "in".

After I had just left a comment here, I realized I had something in my china cabinet similar to your glass bowl. It is smaller than the one you have, and my Mom used it as a sugar bowl. It probably was a refrigerator bowl, but she didn't use it for that.

That's a great find. I have a book in here, I will try to see if I can't find that kind of design.
Thanks for this recipe...

My mom made fried corn meal mush when we were kids growing up in the Chicago area - sometimes she cooked and cooled it, but once in awhile Mom would spring for the pre-cooked version that came in cans... she'd open both ends and slide it out to slice and fry. Not too different from the tubes of ready-to-use polenta in the gourmet Italian food section of the store now.

Your little covered dish is delightful, Muum!

I remember these but I thought
they were colored glass?
Maybe yours is earlier than colored ones? I enjoyed the
moose and the snow pictures!
Glad I am here on Tuesday!
